About Standard Razors

Shaving got expensive by design. Cartridge systems sell you a handle cheaply and then charge you two to five dollars every time you need a fresh edge — with another blade bolted on every few years so the refills you already own become the wrong ones.

We started Standard Razors in 2013 because the alternative already existed and had for a century. The double edge blade is a commodity. Dozens of manufacturers make it to the same specification, every pharmacy sells it, and it costs ten to thirty cents. Nobody had to invent anything. Somebody just had to make a razor worth putting one in.

What we actually make

One razor, in two finishes. Three pieces — handle, base plate, top cap — machined from aircraft-grade aluminum and anodized in Raw Silver or Deep Black. Forty-five grams, which is light for the category, where brass runs seventy-five to a hundred.

That is the entire catalog, and it is deliberate. We are not planning a subscription, a five-blade version, or a range.

The razor we launched in 2013 was a good one with three irritations. So in 2018 we rebuilt the top cap and base plate to hold the blade at a consistent gap, tightened the tolerances through the handle, and permanently affixed the screw — you cannot lose it changing a blade any more, because it no longer comes out.

That is the razor we still sell. We have not touched it since and we do not intend to. It is not neglect; there is nothing left we would want to change.

What we are not

If you are an experienced wet shaver who wants heft and an adjustable blade gap, a brass razor is a better answer than ours, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong thing. Aluminum suits people coming off cartridges, people shaving a head or a body, and people who travel. It asks for a slightly different technique, and most people have it inside a week.

We also do not sell blades. Preference is personal, a hundred of them costs about ten dollars, and you should buy a sampler pack from whoever is cheapest rather than from us.
